The invitation says "White Tie"
White tie does not mean just wear a white tie or a white tuxedo. This
type of event is the ultimate formal, requiring the use of a Black
Tailcoat with a white vest and white bow tie. Usually this type of dress
would be for a fundraiser, debutante ball or Inaugural ball.
The invitation says "Black Tie Optional"
Black Tie optional is a suggestion that formal attire is completely
appropriate, however not mandatory. The alternative dress is a business
suit and tie or dinner jacket with formal accessories.
If the invitation says "Semi-Formal"
This invitation invites the use of formal wear however it is not
mandatory. The rule of thumb here is determined by what your escort is
wearing and where the event is being held. If you are unsure about the
event is would be best to contact the host or sponsor for guidance.
