Ant or termite? Winged termites are usually, but not always smaller, about 1/4" in length. They appear to have two body segments, straight antennae and two pairs of equally long wings. Ants have three body segments with a narrow waist, elbowed antennae and a longer pair of front wings.

 Workers: A colony contains more termites of the worker caste than of any other. These workers are responsible for the extensive damage done to your home.

Soldiers: This caste protects the colony from invasion by other insects, especially ants.

Reproductives: This caste develops sexual organs and wings. At some signal from nature they leave in a swarm to start new colonies.

Swarmers: All mature reproductives leave the colony at once, usually in the spring or fall. They look for small openings in wood where they can pair off and start new colonies.
Mating: After pairing off, the male and female break off their wings and enter the wood to begin a new colony.
